The
status quo in Darfur
Right now Darfur is forgotten by the world, the
war is going on, it claims hundreds of lives while thousands are displaced.
Whole villages are deserted, inhabitants moved to the nearby cities to live in
the suburbs of the cities in bad living conditions. Most of their children stopped
going to schools due to the fact that the parents are unable to pay the small
fee levied by the education institutions. The IDPs camps living in the camps are
living under the same circumstances. Neither the Central government nor the
international community give attention to the dramatic situations in Darfur.
People follow the news of Syria and Egypt but never about Darfur. We hope that
this group of journalist bloggers will be able to reflect on the situation and
role the women leaders of civil and community based organizations are playing.
These courageous women are agents of peace, they are playing essential role in
mediating peace and reconciliation. Being the educated Darfuri women, who are
teachers, nurses and employees the community respect them and listen to their advice. This is an untapped opportunity, these women can move easily among the conflicting parties and can communicate with the war lords in order to lobby for peace and reconciliation.
